soupBackup.java (a backup solution for soup.io)

Usage is simple : after downloading the soupBackup.java you can compile it on your machine with "javac soupBackup.java" or you can download that file from the bitbucket repository - or use the soupBackup.jar.
read the readme file for more details.

$ java soupBackup your-rss-file.rss

Replace Youtube and Vimeo Flash video players embedded on third-party website by the HTML5 counterpart when the content author still use the old style embed (Flash).

jup. if you're in soup.io/friends, click on "ignored users" in the sidebar, if you hover the icon of the ignored user, a little "x" button appears on top. click this to un-ignore the user.
Is there a way to un-ignore a user I accidentaly ignored?

Hey soup users,
today I discovered that you can indeed display a union of multiple tags with my.soup.io/?tags=tag1,tag2, and you can even combine it with the other filters.

There was a script for GreaseMonkey, that helped to avoid long texts in soup "everyone" dash. Currently the page it was set is unavailable - can any of you share this script with me, please?

Scheduled maintenance Saturday 5 July 2014

Around 10:30-11:00 a.m. CEST (8:30-9:00 a.m. UTC) we will do a middle-sized search hardware and possibly also a major database software upgrade.
We don't expect too many problems and should be done within four hours. Follow us on twitter to get notified about the start, the end, and any change of plans/desperate cries for help in between.

You can scroll soup with your keyboard

You can use the keys J and K to navigate any streams; J brings you to the next post and K to the previous one.

For very long posts you can jump to the top/bottom using shift-J and shift-K.

Is the RSS import broken or is it on purpose that the imported item doesn't link to the actual blog? Showing only the description and not the tilte isn't helpful either. (e.g. Stallman zu Besuch in Wien)
Edit: The rss is made by hand, so maybe there is an issue? See http://schlingel.bplaced.net/rss.xml

Bas-Rhin : une fillette de 11 ans échappe à ses ravisseurs après un viol

// oAnth

From this post, (which I didn't repost actively from my friends' timeline), was caused a posting loop of 165 reposts to my account. This happened to me already some time ago (see the entry - in DE - from 2013-01-05) on soup.io. I apologize the inconveniences.

Mobile apps!

Together with our friends the droids on roids, we bring you the first iteration of our mobile apps.
Right now, they are posting-only apps, but we thought it's important to get feedback as early as possible, so you can find those first steps towards a great mobile soup experience on Apple iTunes and on Google Play.
Comment to @android and @iphone to let us know of any bugs, feature requests or anything to do with the apps really!
When reviewing the apps on their store pages, please keep in mind that they are a work-in-progress and that posting capability was higher on the stack since one couldn't do that at all in a phone's browser. Or let me say it another way: don't beat on us for a missing reading capability, we're working on it :)

Please consider changing your password

One of the most widely used cryptography products called OpenSSL, that is commonly used to encrypt web traffic, has been vulnerable to an attack called "Heartbleed", which enabled attackers to read parts of the memory of a server responsible for encrypting traffic.
Soup.io has been vulnerable to this issue like +/-30% of the rest of the internet for a good part of the last year.
While we did fix this issue yesterday, and installed a new SSL certificate today (due to the possibility of heartbleed having leaked the private key, although that's not a big problem due to our use of PFS), it does not however preclude the possibility that certain malicious entitites have been exploiting this vulnerability for quite a while before it became known to the security community and used it to stockpile on login credentials and passwords. Think NSA.
Now, you would think, "who would want my password? It's just Soup, there's nothing important there!" Well, you got a point. But you better make sure that you don't ever use this password again anywhere else (which you shouldn't do anyway).
tldr; change your passwords - like, everywhere.

Change the Soup My Friends text (or any other text)

go into page edit mode.

paste the following javascript to the description  textarea (html id of wrapper element = admin-descriptionWidgIframe):

var people = document.getElementById("menu")   , as = people ? people.getElementsByTagName("a") : [];
for (var a in as) {   if ( as.hasOwnProperty(a) && as[a].href  ) {     href = as[a].href;     if ( href.indexOf('friends') > -1 && href.indexOf('tv') < 0   )  {        as[a].innerHTML = 'Soup mates';       } else if ( href.indexOf('/fof') > -1 && href.indexOf('tv') < 0 ) {        as[a].innerHTML = 'Mates of mates';     }   } } </script>

to change another text just find out the href of the link and either add an else if clause or replace the if as you wish :)

this will only work on your own soup,
but it will work for everyone visiting it as well ;)

(this also is how the pirateship on @jascha works, the source for the ship is on github: https://github.com/jaeh/arr ;) )
the script that loads the minified version from my servers:
<script> [   "h"+"t"+"t"+"p"+":"+"/"+"/"+"ayris"+"."+"jaeh.at"+"/js"+"/arr"+"/js"+"/processing.min.js"   , "h"+"t"+"t"+"p"+":"+"/"+"/"+"ayris"+"."+"jaeh.at"+"/js"+"/arr"+"/js"+"/arr.min.js" ].forEach(function(scrsrc) {     var scr = document.createElement("script");
    scr.src = scrsrc;
    document.head.appendChild(scr); }); </script>

You can find out who posted an image on soup if you only have the URL of the image itself

Everytime someone posts an image on soup on twitter, you instantly go "Awwww, I wish I'd know who posted that!"
And rightly so. Well, now you can find out! Just replace the asset-N part in the URL with whatthepost, so for example if you have an URL like http://asset-4.soup.io/asset/2835/0348_44d6_390.png just replace the part before .soup.io with whatthepost like so: http://whatthepost.soup.io/asset/2835/0348_44d6_390.png - and you will be promptly redirected to the original post. But only if the original soup is in privacy mode public, otherwise you'll get an error.

soup.io suggestions

What's missing with soup.io compared to facebook or tumblr is :

- Having a score (similar to the number of likes)
- Having statistics (to see number of visits)
- An easy access to old post (by date)
